The Kansas City Chiefs‘ troubles fail to walk away from them. After starting off their preseason for 2023 with a loss, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are haunted by an unresolved story from their recent past. The Chiefs have relied on a solid defensive and offensive core in recent years. While Mahomes has led the offensive endeavors for the Chiefs, Jones has been key to their defensive efforts.
In light of a failed contract extension earlier this year, the Chiefs are set to be held hostage yet again. The recent reports suggest that Jones has made up his mind to bleed the Chiefs’ defensive efforts even after the new season begins.

Mahomes might miss a familiar face in week 1
The Jones and Chiefs saga has been evident and public for all to see. After the contract extension talks continued to drag on beyond the OTAs and training sessions, it is set to add another chapter to the ever-evolving saga. Following the cryptic announcement, Chris Jones is set to rock the Chiefs’ ship right before the 2023 NFL season.
In a recent post on Twitter by Adam Schefter, he reiterates the subtle message that Jones has shared for all to see. Schefter points out that, “Chris Jones indicated on social media that he’s willing to continue his holdout from the Chiefs until Week 8 and he’s willing to forfeit his weekly $1.1 million game checks to do it.” While this may or may not be one of the first instances of its kind, it is surely going to cause much concern among the Chiefs faithful. The fans and the franchise may have to wait until week 8 for Jones to don a Chiefs kit again.

Patrick Mahomes sacrificed his paycheck!
Before the negotiation talks descended into chaos for the fans to see, the Chiefs reached out to Mahomes. The SB winners were hoping to make room in their salary cap before heading into the talks with their DT. Mahomes would gladly accept the proposition, shifting $9 million of his payout for the current year into the future to give his team the best opportunity.

But as the talks progressed, or didn’t, it became clear that the Chiefs would need more than the $9 million. This wasn’t the first time when Mahomes would sacrifice money for his buddy Jones. Since he’d left money on the table back in 2020, for Chris Jones so that they could extend their contracts together.

Although the jury isn’t back for the Jones and Chiefs saga so far. The longer the standoff continues, the likelier it is that they may go their separate ways. Should that become a reality, it’ll ultimately mean that Mahomes’ sacrifice was in vain.
