What Patrick Mahomes did this NFL season to lead his team to their second Lombardi trophy in four years is nothing short of legendary. Quarterbacks have always tried to put themselves in Mahomes’ shoes. Well, not this time. Pat is nursing his way back from a dangerous high ankle sprain he suffered in their first-round playoff game last season. However, the recovery is taking way longer than expected.

In his first press conference since winning the Super Bowl LVII ring in mid-February, Patrick Mahomes detailed the process of his rehab and the current state of the injured right ankle. The Kansas City Chiefs Kingdom cannot rest easy about their warrior quarterback just yet.

To be fair, 2x Super Bowl MVP Mahomes made playing through the injury look effortless. After getting hit in the first half of the divisional round fixture against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mahomes didn’t even sit out an entire half. The passer came back in the second half of the game and carried on as if nothing happened. The same carried forward into the AFC conference game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

There Mahomes ran with the ball, eventually getting tackled out of bounds, leading to the game-winning field goal for the Chiefs. Pat also displayed similar heroics in the Super Bowl LVII showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in KC’s 38-35 win. And with offseason activities getting underway, the NFL world wanted an update on Mahomes’ injury. The father of two obliged.

I wouldn’t say I’m 100%, but I’ve had no, necessarily, limitations. When you go through the grind of the week of training, you’re trying to push it and go through the rehab process. But you want to make sure you’re still building. You might be a little sore on the weekends. But I think we’ve done a great job of pushing it to the right limit. To where now I’m throwing and stuff like that and having no limitations there. Running and cutting, there will still be a few limitations going for the next few weeks,” Pat said in the Chiefs’ Phase-1 OTA presser on Zoom.

Getting back on track from this right ankle injury is a relatively simpler job for Patrick. Especially compared to his 2021 injury.

This is a walk in the park compared to Pat’s previous foot injury

Patrick Mahomes has to be extra careful during divisional round fixtures as it seems to be the most vulnerable time for the quarterback. Before the Jaguars hurt him in 2022-23, Mahomes faced a similar fate in the divisional round game in 2021 against the Cleveland Browns when he suffered from a turf toe injury. According to the prolific passer, the 2021 turf toe/pedal toe injury was way harder to bounce back from. Especially because Patrick had to undergo surgery and wear a protective boot, things he didn’t have to do for his high ankle sprain.
