Warrior Chief Patrick Mahomes has a lot on his plate at the moment. Instead of kicking it back after clinching Super Bowl LVII in February, the quarterback has been busy scripting a recovery from a high ankle sprain from last season. Add to that the various celebrity appearances. This includes the more recent Kansas City Draft madness, and the Met Gala 2023 razzle-dazzle. Hold that horse, because the off-season honors keep rolling in for the 2x Super Bowl MVP. This time, Mahomes will enter the horse racing history books.
While his younger brother, Jackson Mahomes, faces arrest and battery charges, the Kansas City Chiefs passer is off to the Kentucky Derby. Not just as a spectator, but as a special guest with some exclusive powers from the paddock at Churchill Downs.

As per his Instagram story, Patrick Mahomes will call “Riders Up” at the 149th running of the prestigious Kentucky Derby this Saturday, May 6th. They may be just two words to the layman’s ears, but ‘Riders Up’ carries immense weight in the horse racing community. It is the official command for riders to mount their horses. The 27-year-old QB1 will make his announcement from the paddock on NBC moments before the race commences at the post-parade time of 6:57 pm.
Mahomes will do the Derby announcement after a night of celebrations at Churchill Downs. On Friday night, the quarterback will join veteran NFL legends Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning in the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala, known by many as the most exclusive Kentucky Derby party. Also present at the gala will be last year’s ‘Riders Up’ announcer, rapper Jack Harlow.

For Friday’s Longines Kentucky Oaks race, 7x Paralympian gold winner and Louisville native, Oksana Masters will be commanding the ‘Riders Up’ call. Before 2012, the ‘Riders Up’ call was strictly reserved for paddock judges. However, since then, it’s been dealt out to celebrities and guest announcers. Some notable former callers from the NFL world include Miami Dolphins backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in 2015, and present-day Tampa Bay Buccaneers passer Baker Mayfield in 2019.
Why is Patrick Mahomes silent about the arrest of his brother, Jackson?
Jackson Mahomes faces assault charges from an incident involving an Overland Park restaurant owner from February this year. The Johnson County Jail in Kansas booked the 22-year-old TikTok star on Wednesday this week. While Jackson’s lawyer and his sister-in-law Brittany Mahomes have spoken out in his support, Patrick’s lips remain sealed. While this could be Patrick Mahomes acting on his PR team’s advice, the NFL world expected his two cents on the subject. Especially after Jackson shared his brother’s Met Gala photos one day before getting arrested.

After the Kentucky Derby, Patrick Mahomes will join hands with his tight-end Travis Kelce to face off against GSW legends Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. The duos will meet on the Wynn Las Vegas golf course to settle ‘The Match’ on June 29. The NFL world hopes for Jackson to be back by then, on the course rooting for his brother. Surely, the Mahomes family wishes for this dark saga to end as quickly as possible.
