Patrick Mahomes is set to face a tricky end to what has been a stellar month in July. The success of his documentary and the night at ESPYs will add to the feathers in his cap. But the latest developments surrounding the Chiefs will remind him of the sacrifice he made years ago. After sealing his 10-year contract back in 2020, he reached out to his defensive wall with a noble gesture.
In what became one of the biggest contracts in the league’s history, Mahomes left some money on the table for his teammate. He’d reach out to Jones to convey the same so that they could sign their extension together. With just one year remaining on their DTs contract, the Chiefs face a race against time and their cap to tie down one of the best in the league.

The standoff between the DT and Mahomes’ Chiefs has not yet been resolved following the minicamp absence. In what is believed to be one of the biggest negotiations for the Chiefs, the DT is holding out for a big sum to put the pen to paper.
Following the latest reports, Jones is holding out for a contract worth $30 million a year from the Chiefs. He has been one of their key players in recent seasons alongside their QB captain, posting 15.5 sacks last season. Over his 107-game career in the NFL, he has posted 65 sacks which have transformed the Chiefs in their defensive approach.

With the current top buck paid to Aaron Donald of the LA Rams, Jones is looking to nab a similar contract following his impressive performances. Should the Chiefs comply with Jones’ request, he will sit right behind Donald’s 31.6 million annual salary. But the developments so far have failed to indicate concrete progress. This is on top of the sacrifice made by Jones’ teammate, Mahomes.

Chiefs fall short despite Mahomes sacrifice
As the Chiefs were entering negotiations with Chris Jones, they reached out to their QB for aid. The Chiefs requested Mahomes to restructure his contract so that they could head into the season with more room in their salary cap. To no one’s surprise, the Chiefs-loving captain complied with the franchise’s ask in their time of need. He’d convert 12 million of his roster bonuses for 2023 into a signing bonus, freeing up almost $10 million in the cap.
This permitted the Chiefs to head into the negotiation with room to add should an option become available. But it’d not be enough for the Chiefs since Jones would ultimately sit out the mandatory minicamp amidst the standoff. Jones is one of the key members of Mahomes’ defensive wall in the Chiefs’ rosters. Should the Kansas City outfit fail to agree terms with the DT in the coming month? They risk the man walking for free next year when his contract expires.
