The ‘roughing the passer call’ on the Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones has become a hot topic in the NFL world. For some, the call against the Las Vegas Raiders shows how difficult the defender’s job is. The latest to join the debate is Jones’ teammate Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs quarterback had some harsh words to say on the matter.

Patrick Mahomes on roughing the passer call

Patrick Mahomes wants some common sense applied while making such calls. He said there are certain situations where it should not be called. “There are certain situations it shouldn’t be called, and it gets called, but it’s like anything in the league, man,Mahomes said on his radio show ‘The Drive’.

Talking specifically about the Jones tackle on the Raiders quarterback Derek Carr,
Mahomes said he had stripped the ball. “There’s got to be a little bit of common sense along the lines of Chris Jones. He stripped the ball. I know some of his body weight lands on him, but he breaks the ground, and he was holding the ball in the other hand. So there’s only so much you can do as a defensive lineman to try to get off the quarterback whenever you have a clean shot on him.

The QB said he believes that the officials in the NFL will continue to learn while admitting that it was a hard penalty to call. “There are definitely times where it should be called. It’s a hard penalty to call, but the refs continue to learn. They’ll continue to learn from their mistakes and continue to officiate the games the best way possible.”

The controversy

The controversy erupted when Jones tried to sack Carr and appeared to have stripped the ball from his opponent. But the play was flagged and the Raiders offense remained on the pitch, much to the dismay of the Chiefs.

The DL said after the game that he wants such calls to be made reviewable. Many in the NFL have echoed similar sentiments.

Whatever that call was, it ended up having no bearing on the result. The Chiefs went on to win the game 30-29. Patrick Mahomes starred in the win with four TD passes while tight end Travis Kelce scored four TDs. The win puts the Chiefs in command of the AFC West with a 4-1 return in five games. The Raiders are at the bottom of the division with a 1-4 return after game week 5.
