Ever pondered what sets Patrick Mahomes apart as one of the best QBs in the league currently? Well, you might answer with his throws and quick decision-making, but that’s not all. Pat McAfee recently had a guest in his home who can provide an answer to this question. As the NFL season is underway, teams are employing their best strategies and game plans to secure victories.
However, if they were to listen to Alabama’s coach Nick Saban, it could significantly aid quarterbacks in leading their teams to multiple touchdowns. Given the current scenario where many QBs struggle to achieve this, for example as in Thursday night’s game, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts could have won with more lead against the Vikings by focusing more on this aspect. But what is the winning formula that every NFL QB should prioritize?

In a recent episode of Pat McAfee’s show, the seven-time national champion and head coach of Alabama, Nick Saban, made an appearance. When asked about the quarterback position and the desire for job security, the 71-year-old coach emphasized the importance of playing well, highlighting that it should be the mindset of every player on their team. He went on to explain, “I think one thing about the quarterback position is you got to be the point guard… you’re the point guard first.”
He added, “You’re going to distribute the ball, you know each and every play, and you’re not the shooting guard so you don’t have to worry about making plays or forcing plays. You have to worry about distributing the ball to the right guy.” Saban’s emphasis on quarterback gameplay is particularly relevant given the current season’s challenges, including numerous incomplete passes and fumbles.
By following this formula, quarterbacks can improve their performance and potentially lead their teams to a Super Bowl victory in the league.

Nick Saban’s perspective becomes even more significant considering that Alabama is currently in the midst of a quarterback competition following their loss to the Texans. Saban’s unwavering stance on Alabama’s quarterback competition lasting beyond naming a starting quarterback has been evident throughout the offseason. During Wednesday’s SEC teleconference, the head coach reiterated his commitment to ongoing evaluation, even after designating Jalen Milroe as the starter.
The veteran coach emphasized, “We evaluate every position every week. If guys want security in their position, they need to play well. Everybody on our team knows that.” He continued, “I think everybody’s responded in a positive way to try to get better and improve. We’ll constantly evaluate that position as we do every position.” So far this season, Milroe has demonstrated promise, completing 60% of his passes for 449 yards and five touchdowns, with two interceptions. He has also showcased his running ability with 92 rushing yards and two ground scores.
