The Buffalo Bills have been stirring up the news, with Josh Allen becoming the face of Madden in the latest installment of the game. But recent news about the backroom might take over the spotlight for the Bills. This is especially clear after new information comes to light on one of their coaches stepping down from their role. This is in relation to the Bills parting ways with their defensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier.

Leslie Frazier and Sean McDermott have been at the Bills since 2017, heralding a new era of performance with them. Together they helped the Bills make the Playoffs 5 times out of 6 between 2017 and 2022. This is compounded by the Bills winning their division championships 3 times in a row with McDermott and Frazier as the head coach and assistant head coach. He helped develop one of the strongest defences in the NFL. The 2022 season saw the Bills win their division and reach the Divisional round in the Playoffs. Which makes the departure of Frazier even more questionable.

Leslie Frazier resigned as the defensive coordinator and informed his employers that he will not be reprising his role as the DC for the Buffalo Bills in 2023. This is somewhat surprising since Frazier was one of the key members of the coaching team. Thus the departure will most likely leave a hole that may be too big to plug.

On the Pat McAfee show, McAfee discusses Frazier leaving the Bills. He talks about Frazier and wishes him and his family well upon hearing about his departure. He says, “We just kind of like Leslie Frazier must be trying to take a break or something. We hope that nothing happened in his family.” McAfee goes on to recall his conversation with Michael Lombardi earlier on his show when Lombardi mentioned Frazier will be leaving the Bills. McAfee reiterates Lombardi’s remarks and says, “I think Lambo has said that he’s a thousand percent sure of that.”

Michael Lombardi goes on to add, “Sean McDermott wants to call the defensive place and Leslie Frazier had was in charge of that.” The rift in conjunction with McDermott taking over in Kansas City which ultimately resulted in a field goal, did not sit well with Leslie Frazier. Lombardi goes on to add, “This year McDermott wants to call the defense. And Leslie for whatever reason, he said no look that was the agreement we had so he decided to leave and told sabbatical.” Frazier left quite an impact on the Bills during his time with them.

Many might consider the 2022 season as one of the best in recent memory for the Bills. The Buffalo Bills repped a 13-3 record in the regular season. The Bills donned the record for the 2nd time in two years, with the first occurrence in 2020 but both achievements came when Josh Allen and teammates could call upon their DC. They don’t have that luxury anymore.

The Bills reached the Divisional playoffs in all three seasons when Leslie lead the defense and performed his duties as the assistant head coach. They came within touching distance of an AFC championship in 2020, as they conceded just 23 points in their two playoff games before falling to the Chiefs in the AFC championship match.

Leslie Frazier and Josh Allen’s Bills have parted ways weeks after the Super Bowl final. This has seen the Bills work towards maintaining their trajectory if not improving it from 2022. But this time, they will have to do it without the experience of their defensive coach. Whether McDermott was right to let him go, or will he come to rue his decision.
