The Jerry Jones-owned Dallas Cowboys suffered a dismal outing in their first season under new HC Mike McCarthy last year. They were tipped as outside contenders making a Championship push with Dak Prescott playing on a massive $31.4 million franchise tag in 2020; however, things did not go as per plan.
Prescott was the sole bright light in the Cowboys outfit at the start of last season. But their campaign was dealt a massive blow when he suffered a season-ending double compound fracture in the Week 5 win over New York Giants.
McCarthy’s boys suffered multiple injuries from there as they slumped to a 3rd-place finish in the NFC East.

Mike Tannenbaum served as Jets GM between 2006-2012 and also as Miami Dolphins Executive VP in the last decade. Having turned into an NFL analyst in recent years, Tannenbaum gave his take on the whole Dak Prescott contract situation with the Cowboys.
He said, “If they signed him (Dak Prescott) two years ago, he would have cost roughly $32 to $33 billion…now the deal is $40 million.
“And to put that in context, guys, it’s already cost you someone like Byron Jones, a really good player. In Jerry’s case, he just paid the wrong guy.

“He paid Zeke when he didn’t have to. He had multiple years on his deal and was in Cabo holding out, could have franchised him. I wouldn’t have paid Zeke. I think who you pay is so important,” Tannenbaum told PFF.
Ahead of the 2019 season, Elliott signed a 6-year extension with the Cowboys worth $90 million (including $50 million in guarantees).
