Controversy can’t seem to stop following Colin Kaepernick. Everywhere the QB goes, trouble seems to follow, for better or for worse. The former QB has long been a conductor of controversy. For his activism or his protests during the national anthem, Kaepernick has been widely accosted as a public figurehead for tough talks on racism. However, his recent statements about his adoptive parents has attracted criticism from various athletes and non-athletes. And, Jason Whitlock seems to be another.

Kaepernick is in hot water for remarks he made about his white adoptive parents and their internalized racism. While many are sympathetic to Kaepernick’s experiences, other conservative figures have come out swinging against him. This time around: Jason Whitlock.

Jason Whitlock rips into Colin Kaepernick for racism remarks

In a recent interview, Kaepernick spoke candidly about his upbringing and the racism he faced even within his own family. He recounted how his adoptive parents, who are white, would call him “a thug” because of his hairstyle. Kaepernick suggested that this was an example of internalized racism and that even people, who love and care for black children, can perpetuate harmful attitudes and beliefs.

Jason Whitlock, a well-known NFL Writer, has been highly critical of Kaepernick’s remarks. In a scathing critique, Whitlock called Kaepernick “thirsty” for attention and accused him of being “unappreciative” of the life his adoptive parents gave him.

“You’re that thirsty, you’re that unappreciative, you’re sick, man absolutely sick, and all the people gassing you up they’re sick,” Whitlock said.

In a berating rant, Whitlock resorted to calling Kaepernick, “Mute-Hamid Ali” at one point.

“Once he started his kneeling stuff and couldn’t defend it and once he exposed himself as Mute-Hamid Ali…I’ve never liked Colin Kaepernick,” he added.

Do Jason Whitlock’s arguments hold any merit?

So what are we to make of this situation? Is Kaepernick in the wrong for criticizing his adoptive parents, or is Whitlock out of line for his harsh response? The answer? Well, it’s not that simple. On one hand, it’s easy to see why Kaepernick’s remarks might be controversial. After all, he is criticizing the people who raised him and gave him a stable and loving home. It’s understandable that some people might feel defensive or hurt by his words.

On the other hand, it’s also important to acknowledge the realities of racism and the ways in which it can manifest even within families. Kaepernick’s experiences are not unique, and countless black people have faced similar discrimination and prejudice from well-meaning but misguided white people.

As for Whitlock’s response, it’s difficult to defend his harsh and dismissive attitude. While it’s true that not everyone will agree with Kaepernick’s views, it’s important to listen to and respect the experiences of people of color. While there are no easy answers or simple solutions, it’s important to continue having open and honest conversations about these topics.
