Entangled in Donald Trump’s legal web, O.J. Simpson now finds himself facing a familiar storm. But for Trump’s team, it might be an opportunity to spin the narrative. Last year, in December 2022, CNBC revealed that Trump is facing a slew of criminal charges, ranging from obstructing justice to scamming the government, to inciting a riot.

Now, almost three decades since a whopping 150 million viewers – more than half of the nation – watched the shocking verdict in the O.J. Simpson trial on a fateful morning at 10 a.m. on Oct. 3, 1995, an ex-senator claims that ex-President Donald Trump’s trials deserve the same public scrutiny and transparency.

The federal courts rarely allow video coverage of trials, and the Supreme Court barely agreed to do audio live streams, nymag.com reported in April 2023. But former Senator Claire McCaskill (from Missouri) had a bold idea on MSNBC’s The Saturday/Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart: She said that Trump’s legal troubles should be broadcasted live for everyone to see.

“This is a guy who lies like other people brush their teeth and he has convinced a calcified group of Americans that somehow he’s a victim and a martyr,” Claire McCaskill talked about Trump. “That’s why this whole discussion about transparency of these trials is important. You know, we all remember that too in the Nineties, more than two decades ago, America watched a trial of OJ Simpson. We all know that it mattered that America saw that trial.”

She argued that the public deserves to witness these trials; she wants to put Trump’s trials on TV, just like the notorious OJ Simpson case. But Politico.com pointed out that in New York, judges have the final say on whether to allow cameras in the courtroom. And the law forbids filming trial court proceedings when witnesses are on the stand.

OJ Simpson verdict draws 150 million USA

Football legend Simpson faced trial for the brutal slaying of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Goldman. After months of drama, the verdict day came, and shockingly, the jury only took four hours to decide. This was much faster than what the US nation had anticipated.

However, the OJ Simpson case wasn’t the first live trial on TV. Bruno Richard Hauptmann’s 1935 trial, for kidnapping and killing the Lindbergh baby, was filmed and shown in 10,000 movie theaters. And, notably, the first live trial on TV occurred in 1955, in Waco, Texas.
