In a sincere tribute to the indomitable spirit of football, the Kansas City Chiefs honored the enduring legacy of “The First Lady of Football,” Norma Hunt. This commemorative gesture came as a poignant tribute at the NFL 2023 Kickoff to a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on the world of football and beyond.
Norma Hunt, the matriarch of the illustrious Hunt Family, departed from this world on June 4, 2023. Norma witnessed every Super Bowl in history – from the inaugural clash between the Chiefs and the Packers to the latest triumph of Kansas City over Philadelphia. The Chiefs captured their third title in five tries, adding to their legacy. However, the 2023 kickoff game night between the Chiefs and Detroit Lions turned out to be a real shocker.

But Norma’s journey began as a high school teacher, imparting wisdom as an American history educator. Fate intervened when she crossed paths with Lamar Hunt in 1963, setting the stage for a love story that spanned more than four decades. Together, Lamar and Norma Hunt brought the Dallas Texans to the heartland, where they would be rebranded as the Kansas City Chiefs.
Norma Hunt was not only the devoted wife of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt but also the nurturing mother of CEO/chairman Clark Hunt. Her influence on the franchise ran deep, and her memory remains an integral part of the Chiefs’ identity.
All season long, we’re celebrating the life of Norma Hunt with this patch on our jerseys.

This season, the Kansas City Chiefs honor the memory of Norma Hunt, their beloved matriarch. In a poignant partnership with the NFL, the Patrick Mahomes team will be conducting a series of special initiatives throughout the 2023 season. Among these tributes is a commemorative jersey patch that will adorn the right side of each player’s uniform. This patch, featuring Hunt’s initials, “NKH,” in resplendent gold lettering, stands as a testament to her enduring presence in the Chiefs’ legacy. On the left side of the jersey, a patch commissioned by the Hunt family in 2007 bears “LH” at its center, a tribute to Lamar Hunt, who passed away in 2006.
A special surprise from the Chiefs
But the Chiefs’ commitment to honoring Norma Hunt’s legacy extends beyond mere symbols. The team, in collaboration with the NFL, has launched the “Norma Hunt Super Bowl Champion of Education program.” The program will honor and applaud the hard work of women teachers with a yearly Super Bowl trip for one outstanding educator.
The inaugural recipient of this honor will attend Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, marking the beginning of an annual tradition that commemorates not only the Chiefs’ history but also their dedication to education.

In a parallel announcement, the NFL unveiled a special rookie patch initiative. Rookies making their NFL debut during different points in the season will proudly wear patches that read “NFL PREM1ERE.” For Chiefs defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Thursday’s season kickoff game promised to be an extraordinary night as he dons this emblem of his NFL journey. However, things didn’t go the way they were planned.
