During an interview, three years ago, Norma Hunt joyfully discussed the Kansas City Chiefs’ 50-year journey in the NFL, describing it as “absolutely incredible.” She expressed the shared sense of joy and an amazing feeling when the Chiefs finally won Super Bowl IV after a long wait. The interviewer also brought up the AFC championship game, where Norma’s son, Clark Hunt, asked her to kiss the AFC trophy, affectionately known as the ‘Lamar Trophy’ in honor of her late husband, Lamar Hunt.
In response to the host’s question, Norma expressed her heartfelt appreciation, saying, “That was extremely special. Clark has done an absolutely terrific job…It was special to me to have our son ask me to kiss his dad’s trophy.” Overwhelmed with emotion, she confessed it was difficult to hold back tears and described the experience as a significant moment where Lamar’s legacy came full circle. She concluded by stating, “That whole moment will always be one of my favorite favorite moments in the world.” Norma never missed a Super Bowl game, and do you know that she was the inspiration behind the name ‘Super Bowl‘?
Norma and Lamar together created a legacy in the NFL
Lamar Hunt founded the Chiefs in 1960, originally known as the Dallas Texans. After relocating to Kansas City in 1963, they became the Chiefs. Although winning the $14 billion Super Bowl is significant for every team in the NFL, the Chiefs owners’ journey is intertwined with the origin of the name itself.
It was Lamar who coined the name ‘Super Bowl,‘ inspired by Norma, who bought a ‘Super Ball’ toy for her children once. Inspired by this, Lamar humorously penned down a letter to the then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, “I have kiddingly called it the ‘Super Bowl,’ which obviously can be improved upon.”
