Akin to DeAndre Hopkins’ situation, Ravens QB Lamar Jackson also did not have an agent for his rookie contract with the Ravens in 2018. He negotiated the deal alongside his mother, Felicia Jones. Lamar also represented himself in contract negotiations with the Ravens in 2022 and signed a five-year, $260 million contract extension in April 2023. Was Hopkins’ acceptance of Jackson’s brilliance truly smart?
The 31-year-old Titans wide receiver was unable to choose a super-agent for a lucrative contract, and even Hopkins missed out on opportunities with the Patriots and Chiefs for his future. Of course, it wasn’t his fault. He recently hired an agent, but even with Hopkins leading the talks himself, they missed the target.

Hopkins followed the same path as Lamar Jackson did when he negotiated his contract with the Titans. He did not hire a Super Agent like Nicole Lynn, who represents Jalen Hurts and is the President of Football Operations for Klutch Sports Group. Nicole Lynn’s highest deal cracked for any player in the NFL is the five-year, $255 million contract that Hurts signed with the Eagles in 2023.
Instead, Hopkins represented himself with the help of uncertified agent Saint Omni in trade talks with the Cardinals. He later hired Kelton Crenshaw in May, who works for Klutch Sports and also represents Eagles star receiver DeVonta Smith.
Contrary to Lamar’s outcome, the star wide receiver agreed to reduced terms for a two-year period, a $26 million deal with the Titans that can pay him up to $32 million with incentives. Hopkins can earn up to $3 million in bonus money each year if he hits 95 catches, 1,050 yards, and 10 touchdowns, according to CBS recent report.
Unfortunate key contract factors

There are a few reasons why DeAndre Hopkins may not have received a contract as high as Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts. The first reason is positional value. In the NFL, quarterbacks are generally considered more valuable than wide receivers. Quarterbacks control the offense and are responsible for making plays, so they are typically paid more than other positions.

Another factor is age. Both Jackson and Hurts are younger than Hopkins, which means they have more years of productivity ahead of them. This could contribute to the difference in contract amounts.

Lastly, it’s worth considering the terms of the contract itself. Hopkins did not get as much guaranteed money from the Cardinals as he wanted, which led him to explore trade options with other teams. The Cardinals were reluctant to give him a large amount of guaranteed money.
