The Philadelphia Eagles had a major sporting heartbreak at the World Championships this year. Devon Allen represented the USA in the 110m hurdles race and went all the way into the finals. However, a false start triggered by an early trigger reaction led to an unfortunate disqualification for the American sprinter. The technicality stripped him of a title in the finals.

Moreover, the trigger creation was just 0.001 seconds early. The narrow margins did not spare the Eagles‘ WR and the referees disqualified him from the finals. The rules of the race dictate that the reaction time to kick off the run should be above 0.1 seconds. Anything beneath the stipulated reaction time amounts to a disqualification.

Further, the 27-year-old sprinter was in complete disbelief after realizing that his reaction time was 0.099. He rushed the trigger after hearing the air gun go off 0.001 seconds early. The odds were stacked up against the runner who was a perfect candidate for winning the 110m hurdles race at the finals of the World Championships.

Reacting to the disqualification, Allen said, “Track and field is so difficult because you train the whole year for one competition that lasts 12 seconds or 13 seconds, and that’s that. It’s kind of like your identity is based all on that one competition. It’s just frustrating, but it happens.”

Devon Allen was running on thin ice in the World Championship

Earlier, the sprinter was marked safe just by 0.001 seconds in the semi-finals. Allen’s starting time in the semi-final was 0.101 seconds. It appears as if he was running on the thin ice of luck that ran out of its charm. The 0.1 seconds threshold was established, based on the theory that any movement quicker would be indicative of an athlete anticipating the gun, rather than reacting to it.

Moreover, Allen questioned if the sensors were 100% accurate and said that he knows for a fact that he did not attempt a false start. As heartbreaking as it was for Devon, his disqualification marked an end to his stupendous run in the Championship.

Although, US sprinter, Grant Holloway, won the gold in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.03 seconds, Allen made sure that he improved upon his mistake. Time will tell if he wants to continue his prolific stint as a sprinter in addition to being a wideout for the Eagles.
