The NFL is over 100 years old, but the game is still evolving. There are changes being made to the rules every now and then. If there is something wrong with the game, the owner will bring it up at the league’s annual meeting. The annual meeting is about to take place in the coming days.
Despite the lack of time, there can still be a few changes made if enough people are behind it. This year some of the owners are trying to discuss a few overtime issues. Once the meeting begins, the owners have the power to put forth the issues to the committee.

NFL owners to discuss the overtime rule changes
This year, the NFL team owners will present two proposals to make changes to the overtime rule. Some make a valid argument about the rule change. Competition committee chairman Rich McKay said “There’s a lot of momentum to” after the playoffs this season, we can possibly see some new overtime rules being applied.
“My history on this rule tells me that 24 votes is not easy to get,” McKay said. “But I do think the statistics absolutely warrant an examination of whether our overtime rules need to be further modified.”
The current overtime rule gives possession to the team that wins the toss. And if the receiving team scores a touchdown in the opening possession of the period, they can win the game. Sometimes this rule is not fair to the team on the defense. The possession is given to both teams if only the receiving team attempts a field goal or fails to score on the opening drive.

“Offense has progressed a lot,” said the chairman. “So that’s why there’s a discussion of a rules modification.” Mainly the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles are the teams asking for the rule change.

The NFL owners’ meetings are just like the game; unexpected. You never know what might happen when the committee and the owners get together. Back in 2018, there were 10 formal proposals presented to the board, and they rejected them all. But proposal number 11 was later made into an official rule.
The National Football League has stated that concussions were down 23.8% during the 2018 season.
