The evolution of the Black quarterback in the NFL and in the game of football as a whole is rarely touched on. But a new docuseries, featuring the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Cam Newton among others, aims to do just that. The project will be led by former NFL quarterback Michael Vick and will feature many big names in the league, players and coaches alike.

What a team to shed light on a controversial part of the NFL.

A docuseries in the making

The new docuseries is the first project of the newly formed Fubo Studios. It will feature NFL legend Michael Vick in conversation with coaches and players to chart the evolution of the Black quarterback in the country and, by extension, in the NFL. The eight-part docuseries will see Vick in conversation with the likes of Cam Newton, Patrick Mahomes, Tony Dungy, and coach Andy Reid.

The docuseries will not only feature NFL players and coaches. Vick will also be seen in conversation with various journalists covering the game and celebrities that follow it, for their views on the evolving culture.

Vick, the first Black quarterback to be picked first overall in the history of the NFL draft, shared his excitement about the project.“I’m excited to be a part of this project because, as a kid, I just wanted to have a shot at playing in the National Football League. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the first African American quarterback drafted number one. I know that was a big step for us in society,” he said in a statement.

The athlete also acknowledged the contributions of those who came before him to pave the way for others like him.

Patrick Mahomes takes the baton

When someone thinks of a quarterback, they mostly think about traditional ones like Tom Brady. But a new breed of QB has taken over the league. The dual-threat quarterbacks. Pioneered by Michael Vick himself, a dual-threat QB is one who can pass as well as rush the ball. That keeps the defense guessing. The most prominent example is the Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes has taken the baton from Vick and made it his own. He can pass the ball like a bullet, and he can run like one. Mahomes has scored nine rushing touchdowns himself in his short career so far, rushing for a total of 1463 yards. And his passing ability is second to none. Michael Vick showed the world that a QB is more than just passing the ball. And the QB position has never been the same again.
