In his public statement, the former Green Bay Packers legend has denied any wrongdoing in the welfare fund case. He has also accused the media of unjustly smearing him. “I have been unjustly smeared in the media,” Favre’s statement said. “I have done nothing wrong, and it is past time to set the record straight,” the statement added.
The Hall of Famer also denied any knowledge on his part that the money in question was meant for welfare recipients. “No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me,” Favre said in the statement.
What is the Case about?
The case is regarding the use of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) fund to finance a volleyball wellness center at the University of Southern Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) issued the $5 million grant. It funneled through a non-profit called the Mississippi Community Education Center run by Nancy New.
Favre had organized a fundraiser for the wellness center for which he received $1.1 million. He gave that money to USM in order to build the center. Favre has returned the money in question but is yet to pay the internet on it.
The NFL legend’s involvement came to light through text messages exchanged between him and Nancy New. In the text sent to New, Favre asks if the media would come to know about him being paid. New goes on to assure him that it wouldn’t be the case.

Brett Favre is not facing any formal charges in the case for which he has been grilled by the FBI. His lawyer has said that Favre sent these texts to New as he did not want to make his source of income public.
