Super Bowl LII was special for more reasons than one. Apart from the Philadelphia Eagles winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history, the storyline was dominated by the performance of their backup quarterback Nick Foles.

After guiding the Eagles to the Playoffs, starting QB Carson Wentz had to miss out on the postseason due to an injury. The quarterback had an MVP-worthy season as he threw 33 touchdowns in just 13 games.

Heading into the Playoffs, the Eagles relied on backup QB Nick Foles. Foles had been around in the league for long, but no one expected him to rise to the occasion quite like he did.

Guiding the Eagles to the ultimate prize, Foles picked up the Super Bowl MVP award. The QB rightfully picked up the award thanks to his memorable performance involving 3 touchdowns and a memorable Philly Special touchdown.

But since then, things haven’t quite gone as planned for Foles. After having spent yet another season as the backup to Wentz, Foles ultimately signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019.

But the QB was soon traded off to the Chicago Bears in 2020 where he battled Mitch Trubisky for the starting spot. And now, it seems like he finds himself in a similar situation.

A return to the Philadelphia Eagles that didn’t work out

The Chicago Bears released Trubisky and signed veteran free agent Andy Dalton to be the other QB alongside Foles for 2021. But Foles remaining on the Bears roster even as a backup remains in doubt.

The franchise drafted Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields with their 1st-round pick. It’s expected that Fields will be the backup to Dalton in 2020 to help him ease into the league. But then Foles’ role now gets relegated to that of backup to the backup.

Appearing on SportsGrid, NFL Insider Adam Caplan said that the franchise did indeed try to trade Foles in the offseason.

“They full guaranteed Foles’ $8 million back in March… They tried to trade him to Philly and other teams but nobody wanted him,” said Caplan.

The Eagles have had quarterback woes of their own since Foles left. Starter Wentz had a horrendous 2020 campaign which saw him being traded to the Indianapolis Colts.

Thus a shot at drafting Foles back to the team that he helped win a Super Bowl was a fair shot by the Bears. One that unfortunately didn’t work out.
