NFL franchise Washington Commanders and their search for a starting quarterback have led them to an unexpected candidate. The Commanders and their fans have been without a recognizable and consistent QB for some time now. In 2018, many Washington fans believed their problems would be over as they traded for Chiefs QB Alex Smith for the future.
But a horrific injury at the start of the 2018 campaign derailed all those hopes and sent the franchise searching again.
In the 2019 NFL Draft, Washington selected QB Dwayne Haskins with their first-round pick with hopes of ending their problems. But only after just a single season, Haskins was released after disappointing performances and the re-emergence of QB Alex Smith.
Since then, the Commanders franchise has been on a QB roulette and looking for someone to be the face of their franchise at that position.
NFL Twitter reacts to Washington inquiry for Patrick Mahomes
Washington GM Martin Mayhew recently revealed their plan to enquire across NFL teams which made many Chiefs fans imagine them enquiring about Mahomes. They had a lot of fun imagining how the phone call between Chiefs GM Brett Veach and Commanders might have transpired. It seems an unlikely situation for Commanders to think of even pulling it off as Mahomes is a key player for the Chiefs.

He recently signed a 10-year contract extension worth $503 million with the team after winning the Super Bowl in 2020. While it is an audacious attempt by the Commanders and their head coach Ron Rivera, it just is evidence of how desperate the franchise is on exhausting every option. NFL fans on Twitter weren’t gonna let them have a free pass about it either as they shared their thoughts.
