The Kansas City Chiefs have themselves a franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. The side recently made back-to-back appearances in the Super Bowls. But now they have set their sights on making it a three-peat.

Only three teams have been able to achieve that feat in the past, the last of whom were the New England Patriots (2016-18). But if any current NFL roster is capable enough to pull it off, it’s surely the Chiefs.

In their winning window with a star-studded roster, the Chiefs are going to be genuine Super Bowl contenders for at least the next two seasons. But what after that?

Kansas City Chiefs need to own the NFL Draft

Appearing on NFL Live, NFL analyst Mina Kimes was asked about the Chiefs’ winning window and what the key metrics will be to their success going forward.

“I think that the Chiefs’ window stays open as long as Patrick Mahomes keeps playing like he does and I will not pick against them. That said, it does get harder.

And the reason why it’s so hard for teams to consistently repeat even when they do have star quarterbacks from year to year is health and money. It’s a hard cap league,” she said.

Further elaborating on how the Chiefs can maintain their success, the analyst highlighted the importance of the annual NFL Draft.

“When we look to Kansas City, and we ask, what is it going to take to keep them coming back and back? I do think the draft is important. They need to hit on some of those picks… You reach a certain point where if you have a star studded top-heavy roster, you need cheaper players to play well to.”

The Chiefs indeed have a top-heavy roster. Going by his new contract, Patrick Mahomes alone will entail a cap hit of $35,793,381 in 2022. And from there on, each season the number on keeps going up.

Having a franchise QB comes with its own fair share of problems. Something that the Chiefs are set to figure our real soon.
