There was a lot of noise surrounding Cam Newton when he arrived in Boston earlier this year. Head coach Bill Belichick spent the entire tenure of his New England Patriots career with Tom Brady on his roster. This is the first season that he will be without Brady’s services which is a unique challenge in itself.
However, Newton has proven himself more than capable of replacing TB12 ever since the league began in September. The Patriots travel to Missouri to play Kansas City Chiefs on the weekend. But it seems like Newton will not make the squad after recent developments.

Cam Newton latest player to test positive for COVID-19: Reports
Patriots have been doing mass testing and re-testing and, so far, there is no spread, per source. https://t.co/0XyCkixjgv

As per NFL insider Adam Schefter, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has tested positive COVID-19 today. The former 2015 NFL MVP award winner will immediately go into self-isolation away from the squad. If these reports are true, then Newton will not be involved in the game against Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Head coach Bill Belichick will have to choose between backup quarterbacks, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer, for the crucial tie against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Newton has been terrific for the Patriots this season. In three games, Newton has thrown for 714 yards with two passing TDs against two interceptions. He also has 149 rushing yards with four rushing TDs to his name.
Stidham, on the other hand, is not a proven quarterback in the NFL. The 24-year old Auburn graduate played backup to Tom Brady during his rookie year in 2019. He only played in three games last year. Stidham could be in line to make his first start for the Patriots this weekend if Newton is ruled out due to the COVID-19 test.

The loss of Cam Newton will come as a huge shock to Patriots fans. Especially due to the gravity of this weekend’s fixture against Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs. The Patriots are on a 2-1 record in the league this year. After a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week Two, the Patriots bounced back with a win against the Las Vegas Raiders last weekend.
