So close yet so far– the thought might have crossed every Colorado Buffaloes fan following their matchup against Arizona. As Deion Sanders-headed Buffs enter a crucial stage with only two wins short of a playoff spot, every match and every minute counts. Colorado’s football journey has been a rough roller coaster ride, from living the high of an initial 3-0 winning streak to losing five of their last six games. Their recent face-off against the 21st-ranked Arizona Wildcats continued the tough ride. A victory over Arizona would have kept their bowl game dreams alive, but the Buffs suffered a 34-31 loss.

However, the star quarterback’s performance has made a substantial mark on the team’s performance. Shedeur Sanders showcased his skills with a rushing touchdown and a passing TD in the first half, but Arizona secured the win with a field goal as time ran out. However, the young athlete hit a significant career milestone in Colorado football’s home finale that has etched his name in the football history of Boulder.

Sanders joined a select group, including Sefo Liufau and Koy Detmer, as one of Colorado’s few QBs to exceed 3,000 passing yards in a single season. He only needs 94 more yards to beat Sefo Liufau (2014) who tops the list at 3,200 yards. As of now, Shedeur (2023) ranks third with 3,106 yards while Koy Detmer (1996) ranks second with 3,156 yards.

Additionally, Sanders hit the impressive 10,000-yard milestone in his college career with a 12-yard pass to Michael Harrison in the second quarter of Colorado’s home game against Arizona. He came into the game needing only 155 yards to reach this mark, having previously recorded 6,963 yards at Jackson State. However, the young athlete broke another record, only this time it was not something celebratory.

Shedeur becomes the nation’s most-sacked QB

Greatness comes with a price, in Shedheur’s case, it comes with pain, sacks, and bruises. Despite father and Coach Deion Sander’s desperate effort to enhance and strengthen the team’s offensive line, quarterback protection has been an issue that looms large during each game. And it is Shedeur who keeps taking blows for the team. Deion Sanders confirmed that Shedeur has to take two jabs of painkillers in the past two games, “to block some of the pain,” and finish the game.

Shedeur’s’ impressive stats, despite enduring the most sacks in major college football (45 times), reflect his resilience. He stands second nationally in passing yards per game (320.2) and 11th in completion percentage (70.1%), his performance is noteworthy amidst physical challenges. However, both Colorado and Shedeur have much at stake. Colorado currently 5-6 is aiming for two more wins to qualify for a postseason bowl game while Shedeur’s potential injury impact, if not checked in time, may adversely affect his NFL draft stock.
