Mistaking a person for someone else is embarrassing, but can happen to anyone. Mistaking another professional athlete for none other than Super Bowl Champ Patrick Mahomes, on live television no less, is an entirely different planet of embarrassment. That’s exactly what happened to the veteran F1 reporter and former driver, Martin Brundle.
With the stars out and about for the Miami GP, Brundle was in attendance alongside several celebrities, including Patrick Mahomes, once again. Although Brundle committed the mistake at the inaugural Miami GP last year, he made sure to make amends this season. And this time, he made sure he got it right.

Patrick Mahomes was once again in attendance for this year’s race weekend, as was his NBA doppelgänger, Paolo Banchero. At last year’s Miami GP, both Banchero and Mahomes were in attendance, and as Brundle was doing his famous grid walk, he spotted Banchero and mistook him for the Super Bowl-winning QB. After his mistake last year, he knew he had to make amends this season.

Fast forward to this year’s Miami GP, and Brundle had the chance to redeem himself. As he was doing his grid walk, he spotted Banchero and immediately recognized him. This time, there was no mistaking who he was talking to, and the interview proceeded without any awkwardness. The NBA’s Rookie of the Year and Brundle greeted each other as they reunited to conduct an interview on the race grid. Banchero’s final words to Brundle? “I’m honored that you know my name now.” Safe to say, there’s no bad blood between the two.

World champions unite as Patrick Mahomes meets Max Verstappen
While the focus of the interview may have been on Banchero’s mistaken identity, it’s worth noting that Mahomes was also in attendance at this year’s Miami GP. The reigning 2x Super Bowl Winning QB was seen meeting up with the reigning 2x Formula One World Champion. Verstappen and Mahomes met at the Red Bull garage before the race alongside Verstappen’s race partner, Sergio Perez.
Mahomes and Verstappen exchanged their jerseys and posed for photos. The two were definitely honored to meet each other, especially as Mahomes told Verstappen and Checo that he’s a fan of the champion drivers. The reigning F1 champ certainly took the message to heart, as he finished the race winning his third race of the season. Perez finished second, as the two drivers lead the charts, in their competition to win the 2023 Drivers Championship.
