It seems that there is a fresh problem arising in the NFL. But it is a problem that is arising because of the policies that they have. League rules ban all non-players from placing bets on any sport. This means that people who are related to the NFL, apart from being a player, cannot legally place bets on sports. But on the other hand, weirdly enough, players in the league are allowed to make bets on sports and events not related to the NFL.

This discrepancy certainly manages to raise many eyebrows about the league’s intention when it comes to controlling the effect of gambling. And now, another disturbing report reveals the downfall of allowing players to gamble, as seen with an $8 million loss inherited by an NFL player last year.

According to a report by Mike Florio on Pro Football Talk, an unnamed NFL player has incurred a loss of $8 million gambling during the 2022 season of the NFL. While the details surrounding the type of gambling this anonymous player was involved in is not specified, it once again brings out the question as to why players are even allowed to indulge in such activities.

The high earnings of these NFL players make them vulnerable to succumbing to the temptations of making huge bets. And while doing so, they are not aware of the future implications that these decisions may have on their career and life. Theories point out that the league lets players legally make bets so that sportsbooks can make money off young players who have a lot of money to burn. Once they are made to believe in the short term that they’ve figured out a system win continually, that’s when tragedy strikes them at best.

And this is not the first case of gambling that has come up. Just two months ago, the league suspended five players for violating the league’s policy of gambling.

Back in April, five players faced different aftermaths for violating the gambling policy of the NFL. Detroit Lions WR Quintez Cephus, Safety CJ Moore, and Washington Commanders DE Shaka Toney have been suspended from the entirety of the 2023 season. However, they are allowed to petition for reinstatement later on. On the other hand, Lions’ WR Stanley Berryhill and Jameson Williams both face a six-game suspension, while still being allowed to participate in offseason and preseason activities. Williams also recently spoke up about the suspension he was handed, talking about how he was unaware of the rules of the league regarding legal gambling. Now, the 22-year-old will have to wait till week 7 of the new season to make a comeback.
