“My father used your name”: Hundreds of Fans Join Colin Kaepernick in Mourning the Demise of Legendary American Singer- Activist

Over the years, there have many influential activists who helped the ones who came after differentiate between right and wrong. Among those inspired individuals was Colin Kaepernick who was fortunate enough to be mentored by the close aid of  Martin Luther King Jr.

Harry Belafonte carved out a life for himself by entertaining the world with his music, but the man never forgot his roots and made it his life’s mission to give back to the community. His work in breaking down racial barriers has been well documented and so were his illustrious 94 years. Belafonte’s impact was not just limited to the United States of America but spread across the world, most notably in Africa. On 25th April 2023, Harry Belafonte breathed his last. The cause of death was divulged by his spokesperson as congestive heart failure.

Harry Belafonte’s life deserves to be celebrated. At a time when racial segregation was still widespread, Harry Belafonte’s ascent to the upper echelon of show business paved the way for the younger generation. Despite not being the first black entertainer, Belafonte was walking in the footsteps of greats such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. While Belafonte’s stupendous showbiz career was a feat in itself, the man layered it with his identity. One of his most notable contributions was coming forward to pay the bail for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists. Belafonte was also a vital figure during the march and even emerged as a principal fund-raiser for the organization.

Much like Belafonte, Kaepernick used his platform for activism and spent the 2016 NFL season by kneeling as a form of protest against police violence. Despite facing initial backlash for his gesture, he persevered through harsh criticism and found a supporter in Belafonte. The musician commended his spirit and viewed his actions as noble, stating, “Historically, those who benefit from the oppression of others have always tried to silence dissent. When a black person raises their voice in protest against oppression, those who are complicit in that oppression are often the first to criticize. Kaepernick’s efforts are commendable.”

But Kaepernick hasn’t made it to the gridiron since 2017. As he continues his activism efforts, one can’t help but wonder if his football days are over. The QB found a mentor in the musician who was able to see the nobleness of his actions, even as many criticized him. As Kaepernick mourned the loss of his mentor and guide, several others joined in to express their heartbreak at the news.

The saddening incident happened in the comfort of Belafonte’s home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Notable icons such as Ice Cube, Mia Farrow, and President Joe Biden took to social media to remember the legend. Kaepernick, an activist himself, who pretty much started a movement in the NFL by kneeling during the national anthem, thanked Belafonte for his years of guidance and stated that the memories and Belafonte’s impact on society will continue to be effective.

“Harry Belafonte’s accomplishments are legendary and his legacy of outspoken advocacy, compassion, and respect for dignity will endure forever,” said Biden on Twitter. One fan thanked Belafonte for being a role model, “All of my childhood to today it was you. My father used your name for every life example. Thank you. RIP.”

Another fan appreciated the courage and resilience of Belafonte, “Unlike some black celebrities who don’t use their platform to speak out against racial injustice. Mr. Belafonte put it all on the line and made a difference! We lost a “true” warrior today. Take your well earn rest my brother. I’ll never forget your courage and honor”

Most fans however wished for Belafonte to find peace, “Rest easy sir, we were lucky to have you.”

While another fan said, “Mr. B will be sadly missed. He brought so much talent to the 🌎 world. RiP HB.”

The outpour of tributes and messages directed at Harry Belafonte signifies the many lives he has touched and solidifies the fact that people are still appreciative and look up to him. While his family and friends grieve, Belafonte’s fans have continued celebrating his life and thanking him for leaving the world a better place than he found it.
