Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City Chiefs is one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the NFL today. Probably, his sheer dint of hard work and incredible athleticism made him sign the biggest contract in NFL history earlier. However, despite signing that record-breaking contract extension in 2020, Mahomes finds himself behind other quarterbacks in the 2023 rankings.

Before him are a few other quarterbacks who had impressive seasons that put them in the conversation for the league’s top individual honor. Mahomes, in his fifth season as a starter, was honored with two-time MVP and two-time first-team All-Pro. But, recently, the NFL released a ranking list where Mahomes stands a little below in a table. So, who are the ones who left Mahomes behind?

The incident involving Patrick Mahomes proves the NFL’s continued unpredictability, as he experienced unexpected challenges despite his prior success. Recently, NFL released a ranking table ?2023 Quarterback Average Rankings? where Mahomes stood at number seven with an average salary of $45,000,000. The QBs ahead of him include Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, and Deshaun Watson, ranging from 1 to 6 (in a row).

Lamar Jackson recently signed a lucrative contract extension for five years, worth a total of $260 million, without the help of an agent. This makes his average salary $52 million which is $7 million more than Patrick Mahomes. Jalen Hurts is in second place with an average salary of $51 million for a contract for seven years, followed by Aaron Rodgers ($50 million) and Russell Wilson ($48 million). Kyler Murray and Deshaun Watson have similar salaries at $46.1 million and $46 million, respectively.

Patrick?s historical contract didn?t help to rank him on the top

Patrick, in 2020, created history after signing his $460 million ten-year contract extension. The contract was declared one of the highest contracts in the sport’s history. But little did they know that within two years everything will be changed. Mahomes, that year, signed an extended contract with Kansas City Chiefs, tying him through the 2031 season. The deal, as per People, was $450 million, which could go up to $503 million, including a no-trade clause and $140 million injury guarantee.

Mahomes? agent Chris Cabott helped him bag this contract and praised the deal on his Instagram post captioning it, ?First half billion dollar player in sports history. Largest contract in sports history. First time NFL player has been the highest paid player in sports history.?

Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt had also shared his thoughts on that contract, calling it a significant move for the team, and was glad to have him on his side. But this season many players grabbed a higher contract than Mahomes, including Lamar Jackson with Baltimore Ravens. Jackson became the highest-paid player in NFL history after this deal, and, probably, this is one of the reasons why the NFL chose him for the first position.

Despite his low ranking in the salary table, it remains to see how Mahomes will perform in the future, especially against tough competition from the other quarterbacks. Also, the expected contract extensions for QBs such as Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow and Los Angeles Chargers Justin Herbert are yet to come. Winning another Super Bowl will be a challenging task, but it is one that Mahomes will need to accomplish to prove himself once again.
