Throughout the years, we’ve seen exemplary leaders and champions in the NFL. And amongst all of them, Tom Brady’s name still echoes fresh in the minds of the NFL world. Having retired at the age of 45 in February, Brady has solidified his name in the history books as the GOAT of the game. Not only did he win seven Super Bowl champions throughout his career, but his insane work ethic and leadership skills have become a stepping stone for young QBs in the league who wish to follow in his footsteps to glory.

And at the moment, Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes is currently the closest to Brady’s throne as the undisputed GOAT. Fans consider Mahomes to be the prince to dethrone Brady as the GOAT of the game in the future. And the Chiefs QB seems to be inching closer and closer to making this a reality in the near future.

The Kansas City drafted the 27-year-old QB Chiefs back in 2017 as the successor to then QB1 Alex Smith. But the QB was not considered a top draft prospect and was given a low grade after his draft. He was also not seen as a player who was not ready to compete in the league. And it was an event that seems familiar, as Tom Brady was also not a top draft prospect coming into the NFL, being selected 199 overall by the New England Patriots in 2000. But fate had other plans for the duo.

But both these QBs have gone on to prove naysayers wrong about their predictions. Brady went on to lead the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships after replacing an injured Drew Bledsoe. And he won his seventh after moving to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On the other hand, Patrick Mahomes also struck his weight in gold for the Chiefs’ kingdom. While his impact was a gradually developing one, Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl appearance and trophy in 50 years at Super Bowl LIV. And then, he went on to win his second Lombardi trophy recently at the Super Bowl LVII. The QB is now just five rings shy from equalling the record of the NFL GOAT. Mahomes also recently received his second Super Bowl ring to celebrate their Super Bowl LVII victory, as he flaunted his rings on social media.

But that’s not the only similarity between Brady and Mahomes. In fact, the 27-year-old is also a team player, just like how Brady was back in his days.

Mahomes knows how to take one for the team

Despite his accolades and being one of the best QBs in the league currently, Patrick Mahomes does not have the highest-paying contract. Despite signing a 10-year deal worth up to $503 million in 2020, he ranks seventh among QBs in average annual salary. And this decision stems from the belief he carries. Mahomes believes that winning trophies is more important than earning a huge sum of money, something which Brady was also famous for during his career. And recently, the Chiefs’ QB also selflessly agreed to convert $12 million of his roster bonus into a signing bonus, making $10 million in cap space for the Chiefs. This will allow the team to acquire more talents to surround the QB with on the field, boosting their ability to win more trophies in the future.
