Brady-led New England Patriots couldn’t win the Super Bowl XLVII. Patriots were defeated by the New York Giants by 17-14. It was a crushing defeat for Brady, and he had to wait another year to win the Lombardi Trophy.
In the next season, the Patriots were scheduled to play against Kansas City Chiefs on September 7th, 2008. It was Patriots’ first match of the season, and during the match, Tom Brady was hit by the Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard. After the hit, Brady had to leave the field with a torn ACL and MCL. With the injuries, his hopes to play for the whole season ended too.
Patriots backup QB Matt Cassel took the reigns and clinched their way to the 11-5 record but still couldn’t make it to the playoffs. That year Patriots were the favored team to win the big game. Also, that year, Michael Phelps had won 8 Olympic gold medals, thus setting a world record.

Phelps was able to break the SI jinx. For those who don’t know, the SI jinx is a myth according to which whoever appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated will be showered with bad luck in the coming future. God knows, for some reason, Phelps was able to avoid the SI jinx but poor Brady couldn’t.
Tom Brady became the cover star of the Sports Illustrated magazine the very next week after Phelps was seen posing with his eight medals on August 25. SI jinx could not affect Michael Phelps, but instead, it took out Brady. He suffered from injuries, missed the whole season, and his team couldn’t even make it to the playoffs.
