The Deshaun Watson controversy is gaining more traction, not in the NFL but in distinct sporting fields. It worsened when the Cleveland Browns gave him a fully guaranteed contract, despite having Baker Mayfield. As the news circles, Los Angeles Lakers icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar voices his concern over the Deshaun Watson situation.

A couple of divisive situations still surround Deshaun Watson. Two grand juries refused to indict him on charges of misconduct. But the Browns quarterback still has an investigation afoot by the league. A lot has built up since then, and Watson could still land in some trouble in the future.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar reveals his thoughts and writes them down on his blog. He opens by saying various sports franchises’ making dumb decisions do not astonish him. But then comes the Deshaun Watson-Brown case. It’s not just skeptical and morally wrong. It is cruel, according to Kareem, that the Cleveland Browns assumed these allegations would only be a minor nuisance and eventually disappear.
He continues, “No player in any sport is above the law, but this sort of criminal behavior is especially heinous and a direct insult to women fans who are clearly not important to the organization. Men should feel just as insulted that the Browns think men would put up with this kind of dismissal of our loved ones for the sake of a football game. Sports should reflect — not infect — our values.”
The Lakers legend concludes his statement by stating that many NFL teams appear to have been on a self-destructive binge of improper conduct over the past year. Giving up watching or attending the games is the best way to counter it.

Deshaun Watson was a part of the Browns’ minicamp this offseason. However, it does not mean he won’t face any problems. According to Wall Street Journal, those with knowledge of the situation believe the NFL is advocating for Watson to receive an indefinite suspension. It would last at least a year. That would imply that the league might suspend him for at least one season.

Watson’s agreement could, however, be frozen for a year if he receives a complete season suspension, according to WSJ. He will technically start his deal in 2023 rather than 2022. Watson would suffer a financial blow as a result, though. It would put off his eligibility for free agency by one entire year.
