Growing up in Southern California, Haggans faced many challenges and personal struggles. However, he remained determined and used football to overcome his circumstances. He attended Colorado State University, where he excelled as a linebacker for the Rams, earning All-Conference honors. His impressive performance in college caught the attention of NFL scouts. And the rest is history! He got drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. And, he was pleased to share the locker room with Joey Porter, who was a dear friend of his.
“I was pleased to be drafted and to find Joey there waiting for me with open arms. They should’ve just played that reunited song,” Haggans told Steelersnow.com in 2019.
He was an essential part of his team’s defense. He brought toughness, versatility, and consistency to his position as a linebacker. Although, he truly shined like a star in the biggest game of all, where the Steelers defeated the Seahawks by the score of 21–10. As a key contributor to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl XL triumph in 2005, he proved he could handle the pressure of the grandest stage. And his performance was nothing short of legendary. With his unwavering determination, he helped secure the team’s fifth Lombardi Trophy, cementing his place in Steelers’ history.
In 2019, he shared, “Obviously, winning the Super Bowl is a cool memory. And the most amazing thing was that Joey was the first person I saw when the confetti fell. We freaked out when we defeated Colorado State in the Holiday Bowl because it was the greatest thing ever. Here we are sharing in a Super Bowl victory.” Not just sports, he was also actively involved with various social endeavors off the field.
