Marcus Mariota, a Hawaii-born NFL standout, stepped into 2022 poised for a rebirth. While still not a Super Bowl champ or common Pro Bowler, he tackled the season determined to validate his quarterback position for the Atlanta Falcons, even after a clean beginning with the Philadelphia Eagles.

But as the NFL, in collaboration with Netflix, highlighted the journeys of famed quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Kirk Cousins, Mariota’s story echoed distinct music. Amid his on-discipline endeavors, the tragic wildfires in his Hawaiian native land solid a somber shadow over his achievements.

It’s heartbreaking to visualize the lush landscapes of Lahaina engulfed in flames, but the wildfire has taken more than just nature’s beauty—it’s claimed over 100 lives. With Hurricane Dora’s strong wings aiding its fury and Hawaii’s ongoing dry spell, the inferno spared little. And as the islands mourn, the NFL’s Marcus Mariota voices the grief and distress that many feel.

Recently, in a Reddit post shared by the NFL, Mariota revealed his anguish. “My heart goes out to them. Hawaii is such a small place and such a close-knit community that almost everyone has family or friends affected. Please help if you can donate or show support.” A plea from someone who, beyond his NFL journey, holds a deep connection to Hawaii. Marcus, introduced to the world in a Netflix docuseries alongside Mahomes and Cousins, now shows the world his true mettle beyond the football field.

This wildfire outbreak has worsened the already pressing housing crisis on the island. Disturbingly, around 80% of Lahaina’s approximately 2,700 structures have been either partially damaged or completely razed. This dire situation has left roughly 4,500 residents in urgent need of shelter and assistance.
