Sam Darnold arrived in New York as the long-awaited messiah to guide the franchise back into the NFL Playoff conversation. But 3 years later, after making his league debut in 2017, the Darnold experiment has been a failure for the Joe Douglas-led New York Jets.
Only 23, the former USC player has thrown for 8,097 passing yards with 45 passing TDs and 39 interceptions in 38 starts. The Jets’ overall poor display in 2020 saw Head Coach Adam Gase lose his job.
GM Douglas moved quickly to recruit San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, as their new boss ahead of the 2021 NFL season.

The New York Jets currently own the 2nd overall pick at the 2021 NFL Draft. The latest reports indicate that it will be BYU prospect Zach Wilson, who will be the man to replace Darnold in the Big Apple. But is that the right decision for the organization?

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty featured on the latest segment of ProFootballTalk hosted by Mike Florio.
Here’s what he had to say about the situation the Jets find themselves in after the San Francisco 49ers traded up to number three in the upcoming draft.
He said, “That was the biggest surprise for me, Mike, that the 49ers didn’t have any communication between the Jets. It kinda felt like the Jets have tipped their hat to the rest of the league that they’re going to take a quarterback and it makes all the sense in the world because you have a lot of questions about Sam Darnold through three seasons.
“If you look at the landscape of the AFC East, it seems like a couple of years before the Jets are going to have the opportunity to compete so it makes sense to go a different direction at quarterback and it just feels like everybody around the National Football League already knows it,” Canty said on the show.

Exciting young QB prospect Zach Wilson had a record-setting year with the BYU Cougars in 2020. He threw for 3,692 with 33 passing TDs against just 3 interceptions in 12 starts.
He has more or less moved ahead of Ohio State star Justin Fields, who is now expected to go and join coach Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco.
