Major Loss for Buffalo Bills After Defensive Coordinator Takes ‘Year off’ Under Mysterious Circumstances

Buffalo Bills had a pretty decent season last year, as they made it to the NFC Wild Card round in the playoffs. Apart from their terrific offense, they also had a fantastic defense, which helped them win the AFC East. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier helped the team immensely and helped their defense to improve as well. As per the latest reports, Frazier will not be a part of the Bills in the 2023 season, which could be a massive setback for the Buffalo franchise.

Notably, Fraizer joined the Bills in 2017 and stayed with the Bills for six seasons. Moreover, he served as an assistant head coach for Sean McDermott since 2020. Previously, he worked as DC with the Bengals, the Vikings, and the Buccaneers. 

Leslie Frazier leaves coaching for one year

Earlier, the official Twitter handle of the Bills’ PR team shared some information about the coaching changes ahead of the 2023 season. As per the tweet, Fraizer will be taking a year off from coaching and will be returning to coaching in 2024. Notably, Frazier is 63 years old at the moment and would like to spend some time with his family.

Although Fraizer informed that he will be returning to coaching the next year, it’s not guaranteed that he will return to the Bills as DC. As per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Bills will surely look to replace him.

However, it’s highly unlikely that he will return to the Bills in 2024. In that case, many NFL teams will be lining up to hire him as their DC.

On the other hand, the Bills made some other coaching changes for this upcoming season, as Austin Gund will be the new offensive assistant. Then, Adam Henry will take over as the new wide receiver coach, and Al Holcomb will become a senior defensive assistant.

Frazier earlier expressed his desire to become a head coach

When Frazier was the DC of the Vikings in 2010, he got the opportunity to become the head coach of the Minnesota team. Since that job, he never became a head coach of any team. Last year, he expressed his desire to become a head coach, as he was waiting for an opportunity.

Speaking about it, he said, “I’d be lying if I told you that I felt like it would take this long to have that opportunity come along, especially after some of the success and particularly the most recent success we’ve had in Buffalo… So it’s discouraging in some ways, but you just have to be able to control what you can control.”

Under Frazier’s guidance, the Bills had No 6 defense in the league last season. Despite that, the Bills’ defense fell apart in the Divisional round against the Bengals. Later, the Bills’ GM Brandon Beane criticized the QB Josh Allen for his performance. However, he also showed faith in the QB to turn things around in the 2023 season. With one of the key members gone, it will be interesting to see how the Bills play in 2023.
