The New England Patriots were one of the most dominant forces during the era of NFL GOAT Tom Brady. Under their QB Brady’s lead, the Patriots had gone on to appear in nine Super Bowls together, winning six of them. After dedicating 20 years to the franchise, Brady went on to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, and then retire from the game completely in February this year. With Brady’s exit from the Patriots, the team has been having difficulties finding the perfect fit to replace Brady and continue his legacy for the franchise.
After the team drafted young QB Mac Jones in the 2021 draft as Brady’s replacement, the QB drama still continues for Bill Belichick and the Patriots, as new updates have emerged before this year’s NFL draft.
Could the Patriots be eyeing another QB other than Mac Jones?

During a recent episode of the Rich Eisen Show, Eisen discussed how NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted about the Patriots hosting this year’s QB prospect Will Levis in the final days before the draft. The Patriots have a 14th overall pick and their hosting a QB prospect brought in questions about the team’s position with their current QB Mac Jones.

Eisen said, “What are they, they are kicking the tires on Will Levis just to see if he’s better than Mac Jones? Really? We’re gonna take the kid from Tennessee after two years of Mac Jones in the NFL. We’ll start from scratch…”
After the Patriots drafted the QB, Jones had a good rookie season without a lot of fumbles. He had 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 17 games in his rookie debut. He then went on to become the starting QB for the team after they released Cam Newton. But, then things seemed unsettling after a disappointing 2022/23 season performance, leading to tensions in the QB department for the franchise.

The Belichick-Jones tension
Last season, Patriots HC Bill Belichick decided to revamp his offensive setup, after former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left for his HC role with the Las Vegas Raiders. Belichick then brought in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, who had no experience running an offensive line in the NFL. This led to Mac Jones being frustrated with the team’s poor offensive plays. Because of this frustration and the lack of trust in the newly appointed offensive coordinators, Jones went on to seek coaching advice outside of the Patriot’s building. This was the initial starting point of the tension between him and Belichick. Belichick has never been a fan of seeking outside help.
With the 2023 Draft starting in the next few days, it will be interesting to see whether the franchise draft another QB for the team, or whether it was all a mind game to provide that boost of motivation to Jones to perform better in the coming season of the NFL.
