The Arizona Cardinals delivered on the promise of the offseason. By extending the services of Kyler Murray, they could keep him in the zone. However, it did not end well. The Kyler Murray extension drama opened up with some drama throughout the offseason. The QB snubs all Cardinals’ references from his social media, which had everyone’s attention. The 2022 offseason had some blockbuster mysteries, and Murray was a big part of it. Eventually, it led to him bagging a heavy-money extension. But the controversial clause opened up intense backlash.

The unusual ‘independent clause’ in Kyler Murray‘s contract drew attention, prompting intense scrutiny. Eventually, the team re-calibrated the circumstance and removed the contentious stipulation from the quarterback’s five-year, $230.5 million contract extension. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport discusses the Arizona Cardinals’ statement on the independent clause scenario.

The Statement mentions, “After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract. It was clearly perceived in ways that were never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it’s ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract.”

As per NFL.com, Murray needs to study materials to plan games in each season of his contract. Furthermore, the franchise will not give the credit for his independent study if the QB is in activities that can divert his attention. (i.e., television, video games, or surfing the internet).

Kyler Murray was visibly upset over the contentious clause

The hard-cash contract extension kept Kyler Murray in a happy place for a while. But the independent clause took away all the glee. It was unheard of and was never a part of previous NFL deals. Murray helped take the Cardinals to an 11-game win last year, and such a clause would disappoint him. On Thursday, QB Murray upheld himself and his work culture as an athlete during the Cardinals media scrum.

Kyler says it’s insulting and almost a joke to think of him as not being a student of the game, not having that enthusiasm, and not taking this seriously. Murray refused to say whether he was upset that the stipulation was a part of his contract. However, he listed his awards and achievements since high school to show his understanding of the sport.
