Patrick Mahomes has set the NFL on fire ever since becoming a regular starter for the Kansas City Chiefs. He claimed the regular-season MVP in 2018. A year later he pulled off two monumental post-season comebacks to help his team claim the Vincent Lombardi trophy.

The 24-year-old is currently on his 4-year rookie deal. As per Spotrac, this is worth $16.4 million and includes a $10 million signing bonus. For the upcoming season, Mahomes will make $825,000 in base salary and a $1.9 million roster bonus. However, given his consistency and performances, he will be on the radar of every team. This ensures that Kansas City will have to offer him a premium to retain his services.

Mahomes is eligible for a contract extension and a debate rages on over a number the Super Bowl LIV MVP should be offered.

A SpotRac Tweet breaks down a potential $150 million extension. Here Mahomes will get a $120 million guaranteed at sign for the next 3 seasons. It will rise by $26 in the following season. Further bonuses include a $50 million signing bonus and a $35 million 2nd year bonus. However, certain sections feel Mahomes deserves more.

Analyst argues against Patrick Mahomes signing a number

On First Things First, Kevin Wildes said, “For the 5-years $225 million, if I were Patrick Mahomes team, I would turn it down. Mahomes should get a percentage of the cap. That’s the only deal I think he should sign. There’s so much money coming down the pipe. 2022 and all these TV deals happen. He has to sign a percentage of the deal.”

He talks about USA Today’s KD Drummond’s article about the cap. Here the increase in TV deals is highlighted with a point made that another deal in the same range will be around $43.2 billion. This is without additional regular-season games at 2 additional postseason contests.

“More money’s coming, more money, more money. And I know everybody’s gonna say you gotta do a rookie deal. You can’t have the quarterback eat up the cap. Well it’s just a percentage of the cap it’s locked in, you can build your team. Here are some guys who have been successful. It doesn’t always have to be on rookie deals.”

Wildes puts a stat showing quarterbacks who won the Super Bowl while accounting for over 10% of the salary cap.

“Brady (2014, 2018) won, Favre won (1996), Eli won(2011), Peyton won (2006, 2015), Steve Young (1994) won. So coach if I am Patrick Mahomes, I’m not signing any number. I’m just signing a percentage.”

What do you think? Should Patrick Mahomes sign a percentage or a number?
