After his flourishing career with the New York Jets was cut short due to his ACL tear, Smith was traded to New York Giants. After his trade, Smith had to be a backup quarterback for the Giants’ legend, Eli Manning. As he went on to be a backup QB, he was very frustrated.
On ‘The Richard Sherman Podcast’, he spoke about the kind of frustration he was going through. He said, “I remember a guy telling me, man you got a better chance of hitting a lottery than getting to start over Eli, I remember someone telling me that early in the year, and it kind of just pissed me off.” Furthermore, Smith mentioned that he used this frustration as motivation to perform better.
He would eventually go on to get a better deal with the Seahawks. After his initial seasons of playing in Wilson’s shadows, Smith was able to bring about a consistent performance in Seattle. In fact, he was even able to lead the Seahawks into the playoffs.

Smith’s primetime season with the Seahawks
As Wilson went to the Broncos, the onus of responsibility in Seattle fell on Smith. And he definitely delivered. He had an absolutely smashing season with the Seahawks. The quarterback went on to put up an astonishing 4648 yards in the regular season. Furthermore, he had 31 touchdowns in 17 games. Smith also led the Seahawks into the NFC Wild Card game. While they did concede the game against the 49ers, Smith put up 2 touchdowns and a whopping 281 yards. All in all, his first proper season with the Seahawks showed a lot of promise.
While Smith might have been stuck in a frustrating spot a few years ago, he was able to pull himself out of it through his hard work. It only remains to be seen how well he’ll perform in his next season with the Seahawks.
