Patrick Mahomes just won the division for the seventh time for his Kansas City Chiefs. But criticisms don’t stop following him. The youngest NFL and Super Bowl MVP has just about won everything in the shortest amount of time possible. But Skip Bayless thinks that there are current competitors in the league that surpass Mahomes in skills and determination.

Skip Bayless is always in the news for his controversial, albeit sometimes justified, favoritism. Skip’s favorite is Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady and understandably so. However, Skip is also a fan of Baker Mayfield. So it’s justifiable if co-host Shannon Sharpe engages at times in some heated debates with Skip’s chosen candidates. And one of them was Joe Burrow as opposed to Patrick Mahomes.

The Cincinnati Bengals QB received some high praise from Skip on Skip and Shannon: UNDISPUTED. But it came in the form of criticism for another MVP candidate in the league. Kansas QB Patrick Mahomes is not on the high list for Bayless.

[Joe] Burrow is just a little better than Patrick Mahomes. He plays the position more consistent, elite-ly than Patrick Mahomes,” Skip said on his show.

Fans reacted to the neck-to-neck comparison between Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow

And Skip is sticking by the facts. Now there might be some truth there. Burrow is 9-2 after the Bengals lost their first two games. And Joe Cool did that without LSU and Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase in four of those games. Joe Burrow is leading Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes 3-0 in their head-to-head matchups. And that’s enough to convince some since it includes two very recent and memorable matchups like their 2021 AFC Conference Championship game or the Bengals’ 27-24 win in Week 13 this season. Fans certainly didn’t forget, and there was almost equal support for both.

Skip’s shakeable faith in Mahomes is not so hard to fathom. Especially since Bayless’ favorite quarterback Tom Brady beat Mahomes and Co. in Super Bowl LV. However, going by Skip’s logic of measuring player success through the number of championships won, his horse hasn’t really started the race. While Mahomes won a Super Bowl in his third year in the NFL, Burrow hasn’t opened his book yet, losing to the Los Angeles Rams last year.
Patrick Mahomes still leads the league in passing yards (4720), touchdowns (37), and QBR ratings (78.6). And without the dynamic Bengals offense at Joe Burrow‘s dispense, and with a weaker offense, Mahomes still leads the MVP race in the eyes of the majority.
