The Niners’ GM John Lynch had earlier affirmed that the management was seeking a trade for their long-time quarterback. He revealed that the talks were going on with two to three teams, but a final agreement was about to get finalized.
Thus, the revelations add up to the series of events that happened during the period. Meanwhile, there have also been reports that the Commanders were desperate enough to pull out a deal with the Chiefs passer, Patrick Mahomes.
Former Seahawks’ signal-caller Russell Wilson was also on the radar in exchange for a few draft picks, but none of them could find a home at Washington. Finally, Carson Wentz inked a deal with the franchise.

Second-year quarterback Trey Lance was later announced as the starter, ahead of the 2022 season. “We have a starting quarterback as a backup,” HC Kyle Shanahan said. “The rest of the league had a chance to get him, and I feel so fortunate that they didn’t. There’s no way that’s bad for our team.” Shanahan added after signing a deal with Garoppolo. While the veteran has now reinstated himself to the starting position, it will be interesting to see how much he fares in his sixth season with the Niners.
