For Dallas Cowboys, the new season will be about rejuvenation. After qualifying for the playoffs last season, they were eliminated by San Francisco 49ers, shattering their dreams of a Super Bowl final. Their hunt for a Super Bowl trophy continues, as one can faintly recollect their Super Bowl XXX win in 1996 against Pittsburgh Steelers. Years have passed, but Jerry Jones and his team still seem to not have found the winning solution to their championship drought.
Now, in a recent interview, Jerry Jones decided to take a light-hearted shot at his coaching staff, as according to him, the problem lies within the coaching department.

For the Cowboys, the offseason has been neutral. They were able to retain key defensive players like Donoval Wilson, Leighton Vander Esch, Jonathan Hankins, and Dante Flower. Their biggest signings come in the form of WR Brandin Cooks and CB Stephon Gilmore. But for Jones, it is not the lack of skilled players on the roster that poses a problem. While speaking at their predraft conference, he said, “Drafting is not our problem, coaching is.”

This puts Mike McCarthy in the hot seat now. The Cowboys’ coaching department has often faced criticism. Bringing in Mike McCarthy as the HC in 2020 meant dealing with the assumed problem. Furthermore, in February, Jerry Jones also said that McCarthy will call offensive plays for the 2023 season.

Dallas Cowboys had the 26th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft. They used their pick to bring in DT Mazi Smith from Michigan. Smith is a beast in defense, and bringing in the DT means creating problems for offensive players of teams the Cowboys will face. This also means that DT veteran Johnathan Hankins will hold the castle along with another high-caliber defensive player. It seems like defensive coordinator Dan Quinn finally has a long-term solution for the team on the field with the newly structured defense and options.
