Zack Martin’s uncertain future with the Dallas Cowboys

ESPN insider Adam Schefter, on his Twitter account, revealed a major contract issue plaguing the Dallas Cowboys star player and team captain, Zack Martin. This further emphasized the absence of Martin from the Cowboys training camp and the lack of the franchise’s interest in recalibrating it. Moreover, Martin exclaims that the franchise is underpaying him compared to the standards set in the league.

Highlighting the issue Schefter wrote, “Cowboys’ six-time All-Pro guard and team captain Zack Martin is considering not reporting to training camp due to his unhappiness with his contract and the team’s lack of interest in restructuring it, per sources. Martin believes he is “woefully underpaid relative to the market.”

Shedding more light on the scenario, Schefter concluded by stating, “Martin is scheduled to make about $7 million less this season than the NFL’s top-paid guards.” However, as the 2023 NFL season draws nearer, anticipation surges among the fans awaiting the settlement of the tiff. But the burning query at present is Martin’s future with the Cowboys.

Will Zack Martin continue with the Cowboys?

Martin stands to earn approximately $7 million less than the league’s top-paid guards, with players like Chris Lindstrom and Quenton Nelson commanding an average of $20 million. Despite his outstanding performance, earning his sixth first-team All-Pro nod last season, Martin feels his compensation doesn’t match his exceptional on-field contributions. The Cowboys and Martin’s representatives tried reworking his existing seven-year, $93.41 million contract, which he signed in 2018. However, nothing substantial has materialized so far. 

In March, the team restructured Martin’s contract for the fifth consecutive year, converting a significant portion of his $13.5 million base salary into a signing bonus to create salary-cap space. Nonetheless, this has not addressed Martin’s underlying concerns. As the tussle between Martin and the Cowboys continues, football enthusiasts can’t help but eagerly expect the settlement of the tiff and anticipate the upcoming NFL season.
