Jerry Jones became the owner of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. He took a huge gamble on buying a sports franchise, but fortunately, his gamble paid off. The Dallas Cowboys are now the most profitable sports franchise in the world.

However, the reign of Jerry Jones in Dallas didn’t start in a great way. During the first home game of the Cowboys under his ownership, Jones pulled off a move similar to what Colin Kaepernick did during his time in the league.

Jerry Jones, along with his guest Elizabeth Taylor, was present at the first home game of the Cowboys in 1989. During the national anthem, usually played before NFL games, Jerry and Elizabeth were seen sitting.

The Dallas Cowboys‘ fans didn’t like the actions of their new owner. They believed Jones showed a lack of respect for the national anthem. As a result, some fans weren’t happy with their owners’ antics. The Billionaire owner didn’t leave a good first impression on his new team’s fans.

A fan wrote a letter to Jerry Jones after that incident

The fans were visibly upset at seeing their new owner sitting during the national anthem. Moreover, a fan wrote a letter to Jones. He pleaded his case so the new owner could know about the tradition of the Cowboys. The Star-Telegram published a letter from the fan that was offended. The fan’s name was Ken Johnson.

The letter said, “JEERS: To Jerry Jones and Liz Taylor, who were the only two people at last Sunday’s Cowboys-Redskins game not standing when the national anthem was played. Riding out in a cart just before the anthem began was bad enough, but sitting while it was played was more than many of us could handle. Jerry, please note that in Texas, we stand for the national anthem. P.S.: Tom [Landry] always took off his hat.”

Since that moment, Jones has made it mandatory for everyone to stand during the National Anthem. Even the players show their respect and stand up while the National Anthem is played before the games.
