While Jones did not give any definitive answer as to when Prescott will return to the field, he did give an encouraging update. After the Cowboys defeated the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Jones said Prescott is moving closer to a return.
“Well, see how it goes. He’s feeling good, made a lot of improvement. He’ll throw a lot this week,” Jones said.
Prescott underwent a thumb surgery last month after the injury against the Buccaneers. His injury was caused by a collision between him and Shaq Barrett. He failed to grip the ball on the following possession and was taken off. Jones confirmed after the game that Prescott would need surgery.
Talking about his injury, Prescott told reporters on Sunday that he is taking his recovery day by day.
“I’m day by day, there’s a lot of growth right now, we’re uphill, things are happening fast, taking it day by day when I can do more than the next day we’ll keep pushing like that,” Prescott said.

The Cowboys have upgraded former Carolina Panthers quarterback Will Grier to the active roster. He was previously placed in the practice squad of the Cowboys. Grier will work as a backup option to Cooper Rush, who has been filling in for Prescott during his injury. The QB played two games for the Cowboys in the preseason and impressed a lot of people. He threw 186 yards in two preseason games with two touchdowns. He also ran a total of 35 rushing yards.
Grier’s stint in the active roaster may be short-lived due to a probable return of Prescott but for a player who hasn’t played in the league since his rookie season, it may be a big opportunity. He was picked up by the Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. After two seasons with the Panthers, he joined the Cowboys on a waiver in 2021.
