The Dallas Cowboys delivered splashes after the training camp opened. Jerry Jones took the media by storm with his media briefing. However, that was not it. There is a new player in Oxnard, California, to fulfill one of the franchise’s needs. President/GM Jerry brings up USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin into America’s Team to compensate for the WR inadequacy.

After releasing their top players, the Dallas Cowboys began their offseason with divisive moves. The trade of Amari Cooper and the release of La’el Collins did not content the fans. The 2022 Draft went well for the franchise, but there were still some issues. Eventually, GM Jerry took it a step further into the USFL to bring in a top-tier wideout.

Dallas Cowboys lock in a USFL standout

On Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys PR announced the addition of KaVontae Turpin. The WR is the defending USFL MVP, who competed for the New Jersey Generals. The team maxed out 90 players, and a roster update was necessary. Eventually, they let go fullback Nick Ralston, a 2021 undrafted free agent.

Turpin joins the forces alongside CeeDee Lamb, Noah Brown, James Washington, and Michael Gallup. Moreover, the WR can cast himself as an explosive kick returner to the blend.

As per NFL.com, Turpin led the resurrected USFL with 540 receiving yards on 44 receptions. The WR also led the league in yards after catch (316). Turpin had four receiving touchdowns, the league’s only punt return for a touchdown, and the league’s best punt return average of 15.3 yards. KaVontae spent four years at Texas Christian University and will now seek to make his first NFL rundown.

Mike McCarthy sees a ‘Cowboy’ in KaVontae Turpin

KaVontae Turpin adds up dynamics to the roster because of his double-functioning ability. But that is not what intrigues coach Mike McCarthy. When the franchise hosted individual drills for Turpin, the Cowboys’ HC saw an existing roster member. Michael Gehlken from the Dallas Morning News reports Mike McCarthy saw ‘Tony Pollard-like traits’ in the USFL WR.

McCarthy mentions, “The thing that jumps out is he is dynamic with the ball is in his hands… I think he’ll have a really good opportunity here… He has some Tony Pollard-like traits.”

Furthermore, with the promotion of CeeDee Lamb to WR1 and Cedrick Wilson’s exit in free agency, KaVontae Turpin can fill a void for the Dallas Cowboys entering the training camp.
