The former center has received criticism largely because he has no prior coaching experience at a college or league level. Now, the situation has escalated beyond just criticism from entities within the league. Calling into question whether the Colts followed NFL’s hiring guidelines, the Fritz Pollard Alliance launched an investigation into Saturday’s hire. The organization, whose goal is to advocate for diversity in the NFL, is inclined to scrutinize the process involved in Saturday’s hire.

The Colts’ hiring process for Jeff Saturday is called into question

NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted a statement released by the Fritz Pollard Alliance (FPA). The statement read, “In light of the recent interim head coaching hire in Indianapolis, the FPA has initiated an inquiry with the NFL into whether this hiring process conformed with NFL Hiring Guidelines for naming an interim Head Coach.”

According to ESPN, Brian McCarthy, the league’s spokesperson, said that the hire of interim head coaches is not subject to the Rooney Rule. This rule requires teams to interview a minimum of two minority candidates for the position of head coach. He stated that the Colts will have to comply with that rule when they move forward to make their hire a permanent one.

The FPA will want to know whether Colts owner Jim Irsay’s decision was in cooperation with the league’s hiring guidelines. The nature of these guidelines is not known. Saturday has declined to comment on the matter of the FPA’s investigation.

Even though Jeff Saturday has no other coaching experience apart from a brief stint as a high school coach, he has plenty of that as a player. Saturday is a Super Bowl champion and six-time Pro Bowler. He has had fourteen years of experience on the field as a player.

The Colts’25-20 victory over the Las Vegas Raider silenced critics of Jeff Saturday. The game was Saturday’s debut as a head coach. Unfortunately, the Colts could not extend that victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a close 16-17 finish, the Eagles were able to pull off a victory. Indianapolis currently stands at 4-6-1. They fall in second place in the AFC South, preceded by the Tennessee Titans. Despite the chaos surrounding the investigation, the Colts will aim to push ahead and prepare to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in their next game.
