Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts promised a mouth-watering rivalry for the next decade when the two quarterbacks fought over the Vince Lombardi trophy last season. Pat came out victorious and even added his second Super Bowl MVP. However, Jalen’s valiant efforts didn’t go unnoticed. And the Oklahoma passer may have surpassed the reigning champion quarterback in a non-silverware category.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed their dual-threat quarterback to a whopping $255 million 5-year extension this week. This pushed Jalen into the history books as he made his place beside Deshaun Watson and other former names on that list, including Mahomes.

Back in 2020, when the Kansas City Chiefs offered their star quarterback the $503 million 10-year contract, Patrick Mahomes forever changed the dynamics of the quarterback market in the NFL. He became the then-highest earner in the NFL but was quickly dethroned by incoming contracts for Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers, and Denver bringing in Russell Wilson. However, nothing stood in front of what the Cleveland Browns offered Deshaun Watson. The former Texans QB made history as the highest guaranteed signing in history ($230 million over 5 years).

This week Jalen made it past all those names. The Eagles secured their franchise quarterback with the $255 million 5-year extension, out of which $179.3 million is in guaranteed sum. Technically, Deshaun still remains number one in guaranteed money. However, when it comes to annual value, Hurts is the undisputed champion. Annually Jalen’s $51M worth surpasses Mahomes’ $50.3M. Simply put, the Eagles passer makes $151,785 per day while Mahomes bags $137,808 every day. That brings the calculation to $6,324 per hour for Hurts and $5,472 for the KC Chiefs passer.

Could another player top Hurts’ contract anytime soon?

Hurts’ extension opened the door for the other supremely talented quarterbacks of his 2020 draft batch. Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow and Chargers QB Justin Herbert are due for extensions. Burrow has already taken his team to a Super Bowl appearance one year before Jalen did. And Joe Cool getting a huge payday is not off the table. However, the biggest question throughout this off-season has been the long-drawn chapter between the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson.

Lamar sought a trade after the Ravens placed him under the non-exclusive franchise tag. However, Jalen’s new contract does give Action Jackson some room to negotiate. There’s just one problem, though. The matter of representation. Jalen had a professional team of super agents working for him, while Lamar has to do it all himself with some help from his mother. Maybe LJ should follow the Mahomes and Hurts model to ensure the best possible outcome for his NFL career.
