When two superstar brothers, Jason and Travis Kelce, sit down for a podcast, you know it’s going to be an electrifying ride. On their latest podcast episode, the Kelces took football fans on a journey into the secret world of the Kansas City Chiefs draft strategy. The NFL Draft has seen a number of upsets and surprises throughout. But one of the major surprises from the draft surely came with the Chiefs’ unusual 2nd round pick, Rashee Rice. Spearheaded by no less than Patrick Mahomes himself, the ‘secret’ strategy borders on the verge of illegality.

Many were taken aback by the Chiefs’ pick including other teams across the league. But the Chiefs were unbothered. Why? Because they had their commander-in-chief, Patrick Mahomes, at the helm of their ‘genius’ move.

On the latest episode of their podcast, ‘New Heights, Jason, and Travis Kelce discussed the blockbuster NFL draft over the past week. Jason Kelce could not stop praising Mahomes’ genius off-season move of working out with a bunch of receivers before the draft. He said, “I think this is genius, and it’s probably going to be tampering by next season. But you guys have Pat Mahomes work out with a bunch of receivers.”

According to Jason, this was a great way for the Chiefs to evaluate potential draft picks and figure out if they would be a good fit for the team. Mahomes was seen working out and throwing the ball to Rice during the off-season, which might have helped him to evaluate how well he could catch and run with the ball. This led to the team’s ultimate decision to land receiver Rashee Rice in the 2nd Round of the NFL Draft. The move is truly a stroke of genius from Mahomes and Co. because it allows the team to perfectly evaluate the capabilities of their next big piece and his fit around their superstar QB.

Are the Chiefs actually tampering?

Well, technically, no. Teams are always allowed to arrange a workout with their next prized pick in the off-season leading up to the draft. But the Chiefs are certainly pushing the boundaries of what’s legal with their real-time draft evaluation using Mahomes. NFL teams are always looking for an edge, and if this strategy proves successful for the Chiefs, it is likely that other teams will try to replicate it. However, the NFL has strict rules against tampering.

Using this as a strategy is certainly exploring a grey area in the bindings of the NFL Rulebook. If and when the league eventually catches up to the workings of the Super Bowl Champs, expect a change in the rules soon. But until then, the Chiefs are definitely going on in their own merry way, ready to fight for another Super Bowl to add to their ever-growing trophy cabinet.
