Mere weeks remain until the 2023 season kicks off. The 49ers are yet to settle their signal caller situation. With three picks at their disposal, all signs point to the 23-year-old Brock Purdy. After sustaining a serious UCL injury in the 2023 NFC Championship Game, he stepped out of the game. The QB who has returned to the field is met with the support of his head coach. “Brock Purdy would have to melt in practice to lose the starting job,”, a confident Kyle Shanahan stated earlier this month.

The 23-year-old drew comparisons to NFL legend Tom Brady after his blockbuster defeat of the legend himself and continuing his winning streak on his fourth straight game against the Las Vegas Raiders beating them 11-4. However, not everybody is sold on anointing him as the successor of the NFL legend, despite his impressive career start as Mr.Irreverent.

A silly comparison?

The former Carolina Panthers guard Geoff Schwartz is skeptical about the general confidence surrounding the young quarterback. The 37-year-old expressed his dismay at the wasted potential of an impressive roster the team possesses while they go for an inexperienced player as their starter, during his appearance at the ‘COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF’ podcast.

Schwartz did not hide his disappointment with anointing Purdy who ended up as dead last pick for a reason as the heir of Tom Brady, despite his impressive start.

“To think that Brock Purdy is going to be the next Tom Brady it’s just silly to me. There’s a reason why those guys that win every year are drafted very high. They’re mostly the most talented players most often pretty can operate well in the system but it’s like those special places; it’s the things that that that set those upper-echelon quarterbacks apart. I’m not sure he can do that”, the former NFL player lamented.

Schwartz also opined that the 49ers are in a “win-now mode” which led them to opt for a quarterback who clearly ‘needs development’ from experience.

While Schwartz voiced his doubts about Purdy he could not help but mention the hidden gems in the 49ers ‘arsenal.

Trey Lance was brought on board when the 49ers snagged the quarterback as the overall third pick in the first round for three first-round picks. However, despite having an impressive rookie season with 603 passing yards and six touchdowns across six appearances, Lance is yet awaiting his opportunity.

“They tried three first-round picks for a quarterback who they don’t even give me a chance to win the job but he’s not even getting a chance most of the time”, Schwartz said.

Touted to be the starter for the 2022 season, the 22-year-old suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks and had to step away. However, with Purdy having the most shots, Lance is yet again made to wait in wings.
