DeAndre Hopkins and Bill O’Brien are on the verge of a surprise reunion. The star wide receiver visited the New England Patriots on Wednesday as a free agent. The two had a rocky relationship during their six years together, according to Hopkins back in 2020. Nevertheless, it appears that they have left their past behind and are currently prepared to reunite.
Hopkins used to play for the Houston Texans from 2013 to 2019, where O’Brien was his head coach for most of that time. However, history tells us their relationship was far from harmonious. Hopkins blamed O’Brien for their on-off connections in 2020 and even revealed that O’Brien once compared Hopkins to Aaron Hernandez, the former Patriot. That was the final event that made Hopkins decide he wanted to leave Houston as soon as he could.

As reported, many fans were outraged when Bill O’Brien, the former head coach of the Houston Texans, traded away their star wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins. But destiny calling them together again, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Hopkins is in talks with the New England Patriots, where O’Brien is now the offensive coordinator.
ESPN Anchor, Dianna Russini Tweet: “DeAndre Hopkins is expected to visit with the Patriots later today and tomorrow morning, per sources. For those who have raised some concerns about Pats offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien and Hopkins’ past relationship in Houston, sources have shared there’s no animosity at all.”
Reading the situation, Adam Schefter, a reporter from ESPN, said that the market for Hopkins hasn’t been very active, not many teams have shown interest in signing him. “Again, it’s been a flat market. It doesn’t sound like he’s in any rush to rush into a deal.”
Per Schefter, “For all we know, some team suffers an injury, some team loses a receiver, the dynamics change and shift, and there could be more leverage at some point in time for DeAndre Hopkins.” Hopkins doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to make a decision, can wait until closer to the start of training camp, which is when teams prepare for the upcoming season.

ESPN expert urges Patriots to sign Hopkins
On May 26, the Cardinals released Hopkins. Earlier last week, Titans coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that the team would host Hopkins. The meeting between the Titans and Hopkins went well, but an agreement was not reached before he left. At present, the Titans boast approximately $8 million in available cap space. Hopkins is now planning to visit the New England Patriots on Wednesday and Thursday and is expected to meet with more teams later on.
According to an expert Dan Orlovsky from ESPN, believes that the Patriots should not allow Hopkins to leave their team without signing him to a contract. He thinks it’s very important for the Patriots to keep Hopkins with them. While Schefter mentioned upcoming situations could give Hopkins more opportunities and bargaining power. And Hopkins doesn’t feel rushed to make a decision right now. The ultimate land spot for Hopkins will be a real matter for a player like him, but only time will tell.
