Despite calling Kyler Murray a ‘generational’ talent, it seems the Arizona Cardinals have pulled out a dramatic contract with their fourth-year quarterback. Although the Cardinals offered him a whopping deal worth $230.5 million, the contract contains hidden clauses that make him look like an irresponsible kid.
Even the veterans of the sport were stunned by reading the homework clause in his contract. Recently, Broncos Legend Shannon Sharpe expressed his displeasure against the head coach and the franchise.

On Tuesday, Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury welcomed the players and staff to the training camp and addressed the media thereafter. As expected, a question arose seeking his response to Kyler’s homework clause and whether he was involved in the negotiations. Surprisingly, he denied all the speculations and affirmed that he had no role to play in negotiations.

He reiterated that he was praying for both the parties to come to an agreement. “My entire role in that was prayer and pleading, with both parties. And it worked out really well for me,” he said to the press. However, these statements didn’t seem to have gone well with experts in the game.
Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe, alongside Skip Bayless, discussed the issue on their popular show UNDISPUTED. Sharpe couldn’t help himself from being harsh at Kingsbury, denying his presence in the negotiations.
“How the hell do you think Steve Keim and Michael Bidwell knew that Kyler Murray was not studying like he was supposed to? It had to come from somewhere,…I am damn sure and can assure you he (Kingsbury) told Steve Keim and Michael Bidwill,” Sharpe said on the show. He also lashed the Cardinals for carving such new unheard clauses into the contract.

“I’ve never heard nobody has never heard of such, and now this is what’s in this young man’s contract. It makes both parties look bad. Because if you gotta put that in the contract, why the hell would you give this man $105 million at the time of signing a $230 million contract.” Sharpe questioned.
What does this homework clause mean for Kyler Murray?
After bagging a lucrative deal from the Arizona Cardinals this off-season, Kyler Murray became one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Murray will receive $46.1 million on average per year. It puts him just behind Packers QB Aaron Rodgers’ contract of $50 million AAV.

However, this ‘Independent Study’ clause will tie him with the franchise for an extra four hours of self-study apart from mandatory meetings and training every week during the season. The management will provide the modules and study materials during the course. However, if he is unable to follow the directives, he won’t receive credit points, which will impact his compensation.
